I’m looking at buying a Ford Escape, an 07 or 08 (although I think I like the newer styling better). I’ve been doing some comparison shopping and have come across quite a few of them that are 4 cylinder, which has really surprised me. I thought an SUV that size would require a V6. The 4 cylinder would be nice for higher mpg, but I get nervous that it wouldn’t have enough pep. I’d love to hear from anyone that currently drives or has driven an Escape, thanks!

get the v6, it has more power, and uses less gas stopping and starting because it is stronger, it will have slightly less highway mpg, but that will be offset by the starting and stopping. four cylinders in general suck for anything bigger than a civic, no matter how good mpg u get, u wont want to drive a four banger. my .02

If you are willing to buy a 2009 model, you will get an updated powertrain. The 2008 and older models had a 4 speed auto and the 2009 model has a 6 speed auto. The 2009 with a 4 cylinder will be nearly as quick as a 2008 6cyl model because of the better transmission.
If your budget means you have to get a 2007 or 2008 model, I would get the V6.

It is actually a compact SUV and I know someone who has a 4 cylinder one but 6 cylinders will actually get up and go.

Get the V6 – no question. It’s a much better overall vehicle with the V6 and it gets 20+ highway MPG’s all day long.

You should also consider that such a car may be expensive to insure. Check your insurance rates before buying one, for example here – carinsurance.enacre.net
